National Geographic Challenge! includes different game modes such as single player and multiplayer Quiz games, the competitive two player Puzzle Battle, Jigsaws and other classic puzzle games. The core game mode is the challenging Explorer mode. Up to four players compete to claim territories on the globe by answering questions correctly and competing in puzzle based mini-games, and by using tactics to foil their opponents.

- On a Roll (30 points): Win 5 consecutive, competitive puzzles in a game of Explorer.
- All for One... (75 points): Complete a game of Explorer with 3 other players beside you.
- ...One for All (75 points): Complete 5 Quizes alone (profile owner only).
- Child's Play (5 points): Complete 5 Quizzes on Easy Difficulty (profile owner only).
- Mommas and Poppas (5 points): Complete 5 Quizes on Hard Difficulty. (profile owner only).
- Prince of Puzzles (30 points): Win a Puzzle Battle against another player.
- Jiggery-Pokery (10 points): Complete your first Jigsaw puzzle.
- Lord of the Dance (40 points): Complete all Jigsaw puzzles. (profile owner only).
- Squared Away (10 points): Complete your first Square puzzle.
- Square Eyed (40 points): Complete all Square puzzles. (profile owner only).
- Slipping and Sliding (10 points): Complete your first Slider puzzle.
- Let It Slide (40 points): Complete all Slider puzzles. (profile owner only).
Additionally there are two secret achievements.
- Diversity (20 points): You captured a Territory in each colour in a game of Explorer.
- Counter-Intelligence (20 points): You have finished a round in any Quiz with a negative score, alone or with friends.
