Successfully complete the game. After the ending, go to Lake Temple and look at the well. You will be prompted to start a new journey. Do so to begin a new game session in Hard mode.
Mario reference
When you talk to the kid with the orange hat in the rift, he will say, "A thief passing by said that he ran into two mustached guys looking for Princess Pineapple or something like that, and to look out for Boo or he will steal your coins". The two people that the thief ran into were Mario and Luigi and they were looking for Princess Peach. In the Mario series of games Boo would steal your coins if you ran into him.
